PAPYRUS
James Cameron's Avatar is the highest-grossing movie of all time. A profound movie about self-discovery, the battle against imperialism, and the protection of nature. The original logo, however, notably used an altered variant of the infamous typeface Papyrus - a fact highlighted in a Saturday Night Live sketch featuring Ryan Gosling. While the typeface is appropriate for the film, I still challenged myself to create a hand-lettered type treatment.
SKETCHES
Papyrus resembles ancient scripts, which works well for a film centered around the indigenous struggle against colonization. My approach focuses on the Na'vi people's deep connection to nature, designing letterforms based on tree branches - like those of their sacred Tree of Souls.
